1. Keep lights burning While you're away from home, keep several low-wattage lights burning, preferably in the bathroom, upstairs and in other locations where a burglar can't see if the room is empty.
2. Lock it up Make certain that all entrances to your house are locked securely. Further hinder a burglar by equipping your exterior doors with high-quality dead-bolt or other key-operated locks. 5. Tell only certain people where you're going Give details of your absence only to relatives and close friends. Don't help a burglar by having your vacation announced in your local paper.
6. Report suspicious activity Take part in community anti-crime programs. Don't hesitate to report any suspicious activities in your neighborhood to the police. You might be able to prevent a burglary or halt one already in progress.
7. Invest in a burglar alarm For maximum protection make sure every accessible door and window is equipped with a detector and have a second line of defense, such as a passive infrared motion detector.
